Mountain Lake Park
A 14-acre park wrapped around one of the city’s few natural lakes, with an easy loop walk for bird-spotting and a colorful sand-floor playground. The covered picnic pavilion is a birthday-party favorite.
Japanese Tea Garden
Winding paths, stone lanterns, a pagoda and koi ponds make the oldest public Japanese garden in North America a calm, magical stroll. SF residents get in free; timed-entry reservations are required.
Koret Children’s Quarter & Carousel
One of the oldest public playgrounds in the country, with long concrete slides and climbing structures on a hillside. Next door, a restored vintage carousel spins hand-carved animals for a couple of dollars; call ahead for carousel hours.
Helen Wills Playground
A compact neighborhood playground with equipment for young kids and a basketball court. The library’s bookmobile brings storytimes here too.
Potrero Hill Recreation Center
This hilltop rec center has a playground, ball fields, a gym and panoramic views of downtown and the bay, with youth sports and classes through the year.
Hayes Valley Playground
This renovated playground has separate areas for toddlers and older kids, plus a clubhouse, sports courts and seating. A favorite with local families.
Patricia’s Green
The lively heart of Hayes Valley, with rotating large-scale art installations, a small play area and a lawn ringed by cafes and food stands. Perfect for an easy picnic.
South Beach Harbor Park
This waterfront park near Oracle Park has a playground, a big lawn and picnic areas, and the Bay Trail runs right past it. Great for scooters, strollers and boat-watching.
Rincon Park
This bayfront lawn is home to Cupid’s Span, the giant bow-and-arrow sculpture everyone poses under. Open grass and Bay Bridge views make it a relaxed picnic spot.
Huntington Park
This elegant square at the top of Nob Hill has a small playground and a classic fountain right beside Grace Cathedral. A good break between cable car rides.
