Stretching from Golden Gate Park to the Pacific, the Sunset has wide beaches, the city zoo and a wooded grove with a brand-new playground.
About Sunset District
The Sunset is the city's biggest residential district: mile after mile of pastel rowhouses laid over sand dunes between the park and Lake Merced, built mostly between the 1920s and 1950s, and now one of the most diverse and family-heavy parts of San Francisco.
It is also the foggiest. Locals call the summer light Sunset grey, and Ocean Beach can be fifteen degrees colder than downtown on the same afternoon. What you get in exchange is space, quiet, easy parking and the ocean at the end of the street.
The commercial streets are where the neighborhood shows itself: Irving and Ninth in the Inner Sunset, then Judah, Noriega and Taraval running west.
Our neighborhood lines are based on DataSF's Analysis Neighborhoods, adjusted where visitors use a smaller area or a different name: Dogpatch and Fisherman's Wharf stand on their own, and the Richmond and the Sunset are each kept whole.

Getting here: Two Muni Metro lines run to the ocean: the N-Judah and the L-Taraval. The 28 crosses north to south on 19th Avenue, and the 7, 18 and 29 fill in. No BART. Parking is free and usually easy, except near the beach and the zoo on a rare sunny weekend.
What to See
Ocean Beach
Three and a half miles of sand for kites, sandcastles and bonfires in the fire rings from March to October. Rip currents make it unsafe for swimming.
Sunset Dunes
The former highway, closed to cars and opened as a park in 2025: two flat miles for bikes, scooters and strollers beside the dunes.
The Moraga Steps and Grand View Park
A mosaic staircase of 163 tiled risers climbing to a sand-dune summit with a 360-degree view.
Stern Grove
A eucalyptus canyon that becomes a natural amphitheatre for free Sunday concerts each summer.
San Francisco Zoo
A hundred acres at the edge of the ocean, with a little steam train and a carousel. Open daily 10am to 5pm.
Lake Merced
A freshwater lake with a four and a half mile loop path, rowing club and birdlife.
Things to Do
Sunset Dunes by Bike or Scooter
The flattest, safest car-free ride in the city, straight along the ocean.
The San Francisco Zoo
The Little Puffer steam train and the Dentzel carousel cost a few dollars each and are usually the highlight.
Climb the Moraga Steps
163 steps, then the dune summit. Not a stroller trip, but a great one with walking kids.
Stern Grove Festival
Bring a blanket and a picnic. Lawn seating is allocated by lottery now, so register in advance.
Surf or Watch the Surfers
Lessons are available from local shops. The water is cold and the currents are serious, so go with an instructor.
Where to Eat
Arizmendi Bakery
A worker-owned co-op with one rotating pizza a day and very good morning buns. Closed Mondays.
Andytown Coffee
The Snowy Plover is the local order. There is a location right on Sunset Dunes.
Devil’s Teeth Baking Company
Breakfast sandwiches and beignets, with a weekend line out the door.
Marnee Thai
A Sunset institution for decades, and the neighborhood’s reliable sit-down dinner.

Is the Sunset District always foggy?
Not always, but often enough to shape life there. Summer is the foggiest stretch and Ocean Beach can be fifteen degrees colder than downtown. The Inner Sunset around 9th and Irving is regularly clearer and warmer than the beach twenty blocks west on the same afternoon.
What is Sunset Dunes?
The former Great Highway between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard, closed to cars and opened as a park in April 2025 after Proposition K passed. It is about two flat miles beside the dunes and is now one of the best car-free rides in the city. Its long-term future is still politically contested.
Is the Sunset good for families?
Yes, if you value space over sun. It has the biggest supply of family houses in the city, easy free parking, the zoo, Stern Grove and the beach, and two Muni Metro lines to downtown. There is no BART on the west side.
Where should you eat in the Sunset?
