About Hayes Valley
Hayes Valley is what happens when you take down a freeway. The Central Freeway that darkened these blocks was damaged in the 1989 earthquake and eventually removed, and the neighborhood underneath turned into one of the most walkable shopping and eating districts in San Francisco, all Victorians and boutiques on a handful of compact blocks.
It sits between Civic Center and Alamo Square, which means the opera, the symphony and SFJAZZ are all within a few minutes' walk, and so is the best-known row of painted Victorians in the city. The weather is middling: sunnier than the Sunset, foggier than the Mission.
It is small, flat and stroller-friendly, which makes it an easy afternoon with kids in a way that most of the city's shopping districts are not.
Our neighborhood lines are based on DataSF's Analysis Neighborhoods, adjusted where visitors use a smaller area or a different name: Dogpatch and Fisherman's Wharf stand on their own, and the Richmond and the Sunset are each kept whole.

Getting here: The 21-Hayes runs right through, with the 5, 6, 7, 22 and the 49 Van Ness rapid line one block over. Civic Center BART is a ten-minute walk. Parking is metered and tight, and worse on weekend afternoons.
What to See
Patricia’s Green
The park built on the freeway’s footprint, with a rotating public sculpture and a playground at one end.
The Painted Ladies at Alamo Square
The postcard row of Victorians with the skyline behind them, a short uphill walk away. Morning light is best.
SFJAZZ Center
A purpose-built jazz hall with glass walls, so you can see the show from the sidewalk.
Hayes Street
Two dense blocks of independent shops in restored Victorian storefronts.
Proxy
Shipping containers turned into small shops and food stalls on a lot that has been waiting for development for years.
Linden Alley
A mural-lined alley with the original Blue Bottle walk-up window in it.
Things to Do
Patricia’s Green Playground
Small, central and right next to coffee, which is the whole point.
Alamo Square
A big lawn, a good playground and the view. Ten minutes uphill from Hayes Street.
The Hayes Valley Farmers Market
Produce and prepared food in the middle of the neighborhood.
Browse the Shops
Hayes between Laguna and Franklin is the most concentrated independent retail in the city.
Where to Eat
Souvla
Greek rotisserie in a pita or a salad, ordered at the counter. Fast, good, and kids eat it.

Where is the best place to see the Painted Ladies?
From Alamo Square, on the Steiner Street side between Hayes and Fulton, a short walk from Hayes Valley. Come in the morning for the light and before the tour coaches.
Is parking difficult in Hayes Valley?
Yes. It is metered and permit-restricted and gets worse on weekend afternoons and show nights. The 21-Hayes runs through the middle of the neighborhood and the Van Ness rapid buses are a block away.
