Japanese Tea Garden

Parks & Playgrounds · Golden Gate Park · 75 Hagiwara Tea Garden Dr

Traditional Japanese shrine bell

Winding paths, stone lanterns, a pagoda and koi ponds make the oldest public Japanese garden in North America a calm, magical stroll. SF residents get in free; timed-entry reservations are required.

Local Legend: The Fortune Cookie, Japanese Tea Garden

What is actually true: The “court” was the Court of Historical Review, a mock court with no legal or academic authority, and Los Angeles, which has its own claimants, never accepted the verdict. KQED reports that researchers traced the cookie to Japan, where similar crackers were being made in the 1870s. The Tea Garden, citing Hagiwara’s family, says he introduced it to the United States from Japan, and that the sweet vanilla version was probably developed for him by the San Francisco confectioner Benkyodo. Fair summary: rooted in Japan, popularized in California, and San Francisco’s claim is the best-loved one, not a proven one.
