About Golden Gate Park

Golden Gate Park is 1,017 acres of what used to be sand dunes, laid out from 1871 and planted into existence by hand. It is larger than Central Park, it runs three miles from the Haight to the ocean, and it is less a neighborhood than a city within the city: two major museums, three gardens, ten lakes, a bison herd and a windmill.

The east end near the Panhandle is busiest and most likely to be sunny; the west end by Ocean Beach is windier and often fogged in. A stretch of JFK Drive has been permanently car-free since 2022, which has made the park much better for bikes, scooters and strollers.

You cannot do it in a day. Pick a corner and come back.

Getting here: The N-Judah runs along the south edge, the 5-Fulton along the north, and the 7, 28, 29, 33 and 44 cross or serve it; the 44 stops at the museum door. There is no BART anywhere on the west side. Free street parking on the western drives, and the paid Music Concourse Garage under the museums.

Conservatory of Flowers

The oldest wood-and-glass conservatory in North America, built in 1879. Free to everyone on the first Tuesday of the month; closed Wednesdays.

Japanese Tea Garden

The oldest public Japanese garden in the United States, from the 1894 fair. Free entry from 9 to 10am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

California Academy of Sciences

An aquarium, a rainforest dome, a planetarium and a colony of penguins under a living roof.

The oldest public playground in the country, with concrete slides, a wave wall and a 1914 carousel next door.

Local tip: Skip the Music Concourse garage on a weekend. There is usually free parking on the quieter western drives near the bison paddock, and it is a flat ten-minute walk back to the museums.
