Golden Gate Park
San Francisco’s giant backyard packs world-class museums, themed gardens, lakes and one of the city’s most beloved playgrounds into one sprawling park.
About Golden Gate Park
Golden Gate Park is 1,017 acres of what used to be sand dunes, laid out from 1871 and planted into existence by hand. It is larger than Central Park, it runs three miles from the Haight to the ocean, and it is less a neighborhood than a city within the city: two major museums, three gardens, ten lakes, a bison herd and a windmill.
The east end near the Panhandle is busiest and most likely to be sunny; the west end by Ocean Beach is windier and often fogged in. A stretch of JFK Drive has been permanently car-free since 2022, which has made the park much better for bikes, scooters and strollers.
You cannot do it in a day. Pick a corner and come back.
Our neighborhood lines are based on DataSF's Analysis Neighborhoods, adjusted where visitors use a smaller area or a different name: Dogpatch and Fisherman's Wharf stand on their own, and the Richmond and the Sunset are each kept whole.

Getting here: The N-Judah runs along the south edge, the 5-Fulton along the north, and the 7, 28, 29, 33 and 44 cross or serve it; the 44 stops at the museum door. There is no BART anywhere on the west side. Free street parking on the western drives, and the paid Music Concourse Garage under the museums.
What to See
Conservatory of Flowers
The oldest wood-and-glass conservatory in North America, built in 1879. Free to everyone on the first Tuesday of the month; closed Wednesdays.
Japanese Tea Garden
The oldest public Japanese garden in the United States, from the 1894 fair. Free entry from 9 to 10am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
California Academy of Sciences
An aquarium, a rainforest dome, a planetarium and a colony of penguins under a living roof.
de Young Museum
Art from the Americas, Oceania and Africa, and an observation tower that is free to everyone.
The Bison Paddock
A bison herd has lived in the park since 1892. You watch from the fence.
The Dutch Windmill and Tulip Garden
A 1902 windmill built to pump irrigation water, with a tulip garden that blooms in early spring.
Things to Do
Koret Children’s Quarter and the Carousel
The oldest public playground in the country, with concrete slides, a wave wall and a 1914 carousel next door.
Stow Lake Pedal Boats
Rowboats and pedal boats by the hour around Strawberry Hill, with a waterfall and a Chinese pavilion on the island.
Ride the Car-Free JFK Promenade
Two miles of car-free road for bikes, scooters and skates, with art installations along the way.
The Botanical Garden
Fifty-five acres and 8,000 kinds of plant. Free to everyone before 9am and free to San Francisco residents with ID.
Free Concerts at the Bandshell
A long free season from spring through fall, plus Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in October.
Where to Eat
Beach Chalet
A brewpub at the ocean end with 1930s WPA murals downstairs, and Park Chalet behind it with lawn seating and fire pits.
The de Young Café
You do not need a museum ticket to eat here, and there is a sculpture garden outside.
Academy Café
Inside the Academy, so admission applies, but it is the easy option mid-visit.
Inner Sunset, 9th and Irving
One block south of the park: ramen, Thai, bakeries and Arizmendi’s daily pizza.
Clement Street
One block north of the park’s northern edge, the Richmond’s food strip.

How much time do you need in Golden Gate Park?
Half a day for one museum and the playground, a full day if you add a garden and Stow Lake. The park runs three miles from the Haight to the ocean and is larger than Central Park, so pick a corner rather than trying to see it all.
What is free in Golden Gate Park?
The park, the bison paddock, Stow Lake, the windmills, the Koret playground, the Bandshell concert season and the de Young’s observation tower. The Japanese Tea Garden is free from 9 to 10am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the Botanical Garden before 9am daily, and San Francisco residents get into all three gardens free with ID.
Where do you park in Golden Gate Park?
The Music Concourse Garage sits under the museums, roughly five or six dollars for the first hour. On weekends there is usually free street parking on the quieter western drives near the bison paddock, about ten minutes’ walk from the museums.
Is Golden Gate Park foggy?
The west end near Ocean Beach often is, while the east end near the Panhandle can be sunny at the same moment. If you want the best chance of sun, start at the Conservatory end.
