French-Swiss artist Saype paints giant images on grass with biodegradable pigments, and his Beyond Walls series of intertwined hands has travelled city by city around the world as a symbolic human chain. San Francisco is the next stop: from Monday to Wednesday, October 5-7, he paints the fresco live across the Great Lawn at Yerba Buena Gardens.
On Wednesday, October 7 at 4:30pm, everyone is invited to join hands around the finished artwork. Yerba Buena Partnership is aiming for close to 1,000 people linking hands for a group photo. The celebration is free and open to all; RSVP on Eventbrite.
Can’t make the celebration? You can watch the painting take shape on October 5-7, and the finished fresco stays on the lawn for up to 10 days while it fades. Yerba Buena Partnership has a list of good viewing spots; the best overhead view is from the upper terrace above the MLK Memorial Fountain. Saype also gives an artist talk at YBCA on Friday, October 9.
Good for families, art lovers and anyone downtown who wants to be part of a big, friendly photo moment.
