Local Legend: Karl the Fog
What is actually true: Karl began as a joke on Twitter. KQED says an anonymous creator launched @KarlTheFog in August 2010, inspired by parody accounts such as @BPGlobalPR, and named it after the misunderstood giant in the 2003 film Big Fish. The account passed 348,000 followers, and people started calling the fog Karl in everyday conversation.
