Litquake and Lit Crawl 2026: Dates, Free Events and How Lit Crawl Works

Litquake is San Francisco’s literary festival, and Lit Crawl is its famous last night: hundreds of short readings, in rounds, in every kind of room in the Mission, from bookshops to laundromats. It is free, and it is one of the best nights out in the city’s calendar. Here is what is confirmed for 2026.

The 2026 Dates

Litquake gives the 2026 festival as 8 to 24 October. Its schedule also carries literary events well outside those dates, so the table sticks to the dated events it lists for this year’s festival.

How Lit Crawl Works

Readings happen in several venues at once, in timed rounds, and you walk between them. Litquake describes it as the world’s largest free pop-up literary event, with more than 250 authors and close to 5,000 people. The venues are the point: bars, cafés, galleries and bookshops, but also tattoo parlours, barbershops and laundromats. The 2026 Lit Crawl schedule is out: 51 readings in three rounds, starting at 5pm, 6:30pm and 8pm, then the afterparty at 9pm. No RSVP is needed and seating is first come, first served. The 2026 crawl uses 21 venues along Valencia and Mission Streets and their side streets, from Martuni’s at Market and Valencia to Medicine for Nightmares on 24th Street. Among them are Muddy Waters, Dog Eared Books, 826 Valencia, Ritual Coffee Roasters, Artists’ Television Access, Red Poppy Art House, the SF Mime Troupe’s studio and St. John the Evangelist Church on 15th Street. The afterparty is at The Drawing Room: ANNEX, 599 Valencia St.

Arrive at your first stop early: the rooms are small and the popular readings fill. Some venues are bars, so check each stop’s details on the schedule if you are bringing anyone under 21. This year’s schedule also has readings by young writers, including a teen reading from Ruth Asawa School of the Arts and, in the 8pm round, a reading by tweens and teens.

The Book Fair (Held Sunday 4 October)

Litquake Out Loud took place on Sunday 4 October: an afternoon of readings on the Yerba Buena lawn alongside a book fair of Bay Area presses and booksellers. Free, outdoors and all ages. It is on our calendar as Litquake Out Loud + Book Fair, and Lit Crawl is listed as Lit Crawl SF 2026.
