Litquake is San Francisco’s literary festival, and Lit Crawl is its famous last night: hundreds of short readings, in rounds, in every kind of room in the Mission, from bookshops to laundromats. It is free, and it is one of the best nights out in the city’s calendar. Here is what is confirmed for 2026.

Litquake does not publish a single start-to-finish range for the festival, and its schedule also carries literary events well outside October, so the table sticks to the dated events it lists for this year’s festival.
How Lit Crawl works
Readings happen in several venues at once, in timed rounds, and you walk between them. Litquake describes it as the world’s largest free pop-up literary event, with more than 250 authors and close to 5,000 people. The venues are the point: bars, cafés, galleries and bookshops, but also tattoo parlours, barbershops and laundromats. The 2026 venue list and round times are still to come.
Arrive at your first stop early: the rooms are small and the popular readings fill. Some venues are bars, so check each stop’s details on the schedule if you are bringing anyone under 21.
Litquake and the Lit Crawl schedule
The easiest way in: the Book Fair
If you have never been, start with Litquake Out Loud on Sunday 4 October: an afternoon of readings on the Yerba Buena lawn alongside a book fair of Bay Area presses and booksellers. Free, outdoors and all ages. It is on our calendar as Litquake Out Loud + Book Fair, and Lit Crawl is listed as Lit Crawl SF 2026.

When is Lit Crawl 2026?

Is Lit Crawl free?
Yes. Litquake describes Lit Crawl as the world’s largest free pop-up literary event: more than 250 authors reading in bars, cafés, galleries, bookshops, barbershops, tattoo parlours and laundromats, with close to 5,000 people walking between them.
Is Litquake free?
Partly. The Book Fair on 4 October and Lit Crawl on 24 October are free. The rest of the festival mixes free, pay-what-you-can and paid events, and some ticketed events sell out, so check each listing on the official schedule.
Can children go to Lit Crawl?
Lit Crawl is not a children’s event, and some venues are bars. Venue details, including any age limits, are on the Lit Crawl schedule when it is published; the Book Fair on 4 October is the all-ages Litquake event.
