Neighborhood
Bernal Heights

A sunny hilltop neighborhood with 360-degree city views, renewed playgrounds and a kid-friendly library on Cortland Avenue.
Bernal Heights is a hilltop neighborhood centered on Bernal Hill, which SF Rec and Park describes as offering a 360-degree panorama of the Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, downtown and the East Bay hills. Its slopes are often still sunny when Twin Peaks is fogged in, and a paved limited-access road plus dirt trails wind up to the summit. The land was once part of a 4,446-acre grant awarded to José Cornelio de Bernal, and the hill’s stable rock left few homes here damaged in the 1906 earthquake.
For families, playgrounds are the big draw. Bernal Heights Playground at 500 Moultrie Street reopened on November 3, 2025 after a full renewal with new equipment and accessible surfacing. Holly Park, one of the city’s oldest public parks, has a renovated playground and a path around its perimeter, while Precita Park has a gated playground and a butterfly garden. The Bernal Heights Branch Library on Cortland Avenue runs storytimes for babies, toddlers and families, and the 24 Divisadero bus stops all along Cortland.

What to See
Bernal Heights Park
Bernal Hill's summit gives a 360-degree panorama of the Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, downtown and San Bruno Mountain, and its slopes are often sunny when Twin Peaks is fogged in. A paved limited-access road and well-defined dirt trails circle the hill to the top. Rec and Park lists an off-leash dog play area here, so expect plenty of dogs on the trails with little ones.
Holly Park
One of the city's oldest public parks, renovated with a playground of slides, swings and climbing ropes plus tennis and basketball courts. Gated picnic/BBQ areas are popular for birthday parties, and a path loops the perimeter with a hilltop city view. Restrooms are on site; Rec and Park lists fall/winter restroom hours of 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Precita Park
A 2.06-acre neighborhood park with a butterfly garden and a colorful, gated playground with a sand play structure. Benches line the perimeter so parents can sit while kids play, and the grassy field suits ball games and Frisbee. Dogs are welcome too.
Things to Do
Bernal Heights Playground and Recreation Center
The playground reopened on November 3, 2025 after a renewal that replaced all play equipment and swapped sand and old tiles for fully accessible surfacing. The final design called for Robinia wood equipment, toddler swings, spring riders, an accessible merry-go-round and a shade structure on the west side. The site also has a full basketball court, a clubhouse and restrooms.
Bernal Heights Branch Library
The branch runs Baby Rhymes & Playtime (ages 0-2), Toddler Storytimes and Family Storytime (ages 0-5), plus a Lego Night for ages 5 and up. It also keeps a Spanish-language collection for adults and children. Hours vary by day, so check the SFPL page before you go.
Alemany Farm
Billed as the largest agricultural site in San Francisco, the farm lets visitors learn where food comes from, help out at community workdays and take home fresh produce for free. It is run by Friends of Alemany Farm with SF Rec and Park as its public lands partner. Pathways are uneven and the farm is not ADA accessible, so leave the stroller and wear sturdy shoes.
Where to Eat
Black Jet Baking Co.
A woman-owned and operated bakery at the corner of Cortland and Gates. The bakery is closed Monday and Tuesday, and its website takes online orders, handy for picking up treats before a walk up Bernal Hill.
The Good Life Grocery
A neighborhood grocery on Cortland Avenue with seasonal produce, freshly prepared sides and catering. It offers online shopping and delivery, an easy way to stock a picnic for Holly Park or Precita Park.
Alemany Farmers Market
Opened in 1943 as the first farmers market in California, the "People's Market" sells produce from local farms every Saturday. Since February 2026 it has been operated by the nonprofit Foodwise. Families get free on-site parking, and the market is wheelchair accessible.
