You cannot simply turn up. Angel Island, Berkeley and Oakland by BART, and Half Moon Bay via Caltrain are the other car-free options; check the current operator and fare for the Angel Island ferry before relying on it, because the service has changed hands.

An important safety note: San Francisco’s ocean beaches are not swimming beaches. Other things locals will tell you are overrated: Union Square, which is now largely a shopping street; Lombard Street, which is not actually the crookedest street in the city; and walking the entire length of the Golden Gate Bridge, which is loud and better appreciated from underneath it at Fort Point.
