Walk the stairs beside the famous zigzag block and watch cars wind through its tight turns. Flower beds and bay views make for great photos, and a Powell-Hyde cable car stops at the top.
Local Legend: “The Crookedest Street in the World”: Lombard vs Vermont
What is actually true: Both claims are old: Chronicle photo captions from 1987 already called Vermont “said to be more crooked”. Lombard’s zigzag block was built in 1922, when the straight street was too steep for cars; Vermont’s curves were built in the 1930s and it has been one-way downhill since 1977 (SFGATE, Potrero View). Sources measure the curves and slopes differently, so we are not naming a winner.
