32 San Francisco parks have a dog play area. Where they are, the leash, license and vaccination rules from Recreation and Parks, and what the city data leaves out.

San Francisco’s city park data lists 38 dog play areas inside 32 parks. Everywhere else in the city, dogs have to be on a leash. This guide lists the parks, with the rules from San Francisco Recreation and Parks, and says what the data does not tell us.

The short version: 32 parks have at least one dog play area, and Golden Gate Park has the most (5). Outside a play area the Health Code requires a leash, you must stay with your dog, and the dog needs a current license and rabies vaccination if it is over 4 months old.

What Are the Rules?

San Francisco Recreation and Parks quotes the Health Code on its dog page. These are the points it states:

Dog rules stated by San Francisco Recreation and Parks
RuleWhat it says
LeashHealth Code section 41.12: all dogs must be leashed or tethered except in designated exercise areas, and the handler stays with the dog.
LicenseSection 41.15: every dog over 4 months old must have a current license.
Rabies vaccinationSection 41.18: dogs over 4 months must have current rabies vaccinations.
WastePick up and remove dog waste; walkers carry materials to do it.
Noise and diggingControl excessive barking and stop digging and destructive behavior.
Dog walkersThe department asks walkers to limit the dogs in their care to eight.

San Francisco Recreation and Parks: Dog Play Areas

Which Parks Have a Dog Play Area?

The table is built from the city’s park inventory, joined in our park comparison dataset (data as of 2026-09-18). The score is the park’s FY2025 maintenance score from the city’s park evaluations. Each count is the number of dog play areas the inventory lists in that park; it does not say whether an area is fenced.

Map of Dog Play Areas

31 of 32 places are pinned. Tap a pin for the page and directions. Dashed pins were placed from the street address we printed and are approximate. © OpenStreetMap contributors. Confirm the spot on the official page before you drive.

Not pinned (no confirmed location yet): The Rocks Dog Park.

Pins mark the park, not the play area inside it. In large parks such as Golden Gate Park and John McLaren Park the dog area can be a long walk from the pin.

What We Could Not Verify

  • San Francisco Recreation and Parks says there are 36 designated dog play areas, but its page names only 33. The inventory we use lists 38 areas in 32 parks. We have not reconciled the three numbers.
  • Opening hours are not stated on the department’s dog page. Check the posted sign at the park.
  • Whether each area is fenced is not in the inventory. The department’s page describes U.N. Plaza as fully fenced, and Buena Vista and Walter Haas as enclosed; we do not know about the rest.
  • The Rocks Dog Park on Treasure Island has no coordinates in the inventory, so it is not on the map.
