The most important photography gallery on the West Coast, on the fourth floor of the 49 Geary building that once held a dozen galleries across four floors. It handles the Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander and Richard Avedon estates alongside living photographers, and hangs work sparely with a lot of wall between pieces.
Free to walk into. Quiet and adult-paced: good for a teenager with an interest in photography, frustrating for anyone under ten. Tuesday to Friday 10.30am–5.30pm, Saturday 11am–5pm, closed Sunday and Monday.
