Sixty acres of wild canyon in the middle of the city. Past the recreation center, ball field and tennis courts, trails follow Islais Creek, one of the few free-flowing creeks left in San Francisco, and climb past chert rock outcrops and eucalyptus. Spring brings poppies and other wildflowers to the slopes.
The trail network runs 3.7 miles; the 1.2-mile Creeks to Peaks trail starts along the creek and rises toward Twin Peaks for views over the city and the Bay. Families with small kids can stay near Elk Street, where the playground, picnic area and restrooms are. The park is open 5 a.m. to midnight. Glen Park BART is a short walk away.
