Chinatown and North Beach with Kids: A Walking Day

Two of the oldest neighborhoods in San Francisco sit side by side, both walkable, both full of food, and both far more interesting to kids than anyone expects. Here is a route that takes three to five hours with stops.

Chinatown

Start at the Dragon Gate

Grant Avenue at Bush Street, with its guardian lions and green tile roof, dedicated in 1970 as a gift from Taiwan. It is the proper front door to the neighborhood and the first photo of the day.

Walk Grant Avenue and turn into the alleys

Grant is the tourist spine and it is fun, but the neighborhood lives in the alleys. Waverly Place, a block west between Washington and Sacramento, is the one with the painted balconies and the temples on upper floors. Ross Alley, between Jackson and Washington, is the oldest alley in the city.

Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory

In Ross Alley, two women fold cookies by hand on small hot presses, the way it has been done for decades. Kids can watch from inches away and buy a bag of fresh, still-warm cookies. There is a small charge for taking photos, and hours can vary in a shop this small.

Chinese Historical Society of America

A small museum in a landmark building that tells the story of the neighborhood plainly and well. Open a limited schedule, currently Wednesdays and Saturdays, 10am to 5pm, so build your day around it if you want to go.

Playground stops

Portsmouth Square is the neighborhood’s living room, with a tot lot whose play structures are Chinese zodiac animals. A major redesign of the square has been in the works, so it may be partly fenced off; Willie “Woo Woo” Wong Playground on Sacramento Street near Waverly is the backup, named for a legendary local basketball player.

Eat

Dim sum by the piece from a takeout counter is the move with kids: fast, cheap, and no waiting for a table. Good Mong Kok on Stockton is the classic, cash only, and you eat it in Portsmouth Square. Save room for an egg custard tart.

Over the hill to North Beach

Cable Car Museum

A short uphill detour to Mason Street, free, and full of the enormous spinning wheels that pull the cables under the streets you just walked. Twenty minutes, and it recalibrates a tired kid.

Washington Square Park

The heart of North Beach: a big lawn to run on, morning tai chi, and the twin spires of Saints Peter and Paul Church across the street. This is the picnic and regroup stop.

City Lights Bookstore

The Beat-era landmark on Columbus, open until 10pm daily, with a children’s section and the poetry room upstairs. Free, indoors, and a good rainy-hour refuge.

Pizza by the slice and gelato

Columbus and Grant are full of both. Square Sicilian slices eaten standing up are a North Beach institution, and gelato afterwards buys you another hour of walking.

Coit Tower and the Filbert Steps

If legs allow: up Telegraph Hill to the tower for the murals and the view, then down the Filbert Steps through the cottage gardens, where the wild parrots live. The steps are steep and stair-heavy, so this is the part to skip with a stroller.

Practical notes

Chinatown’s core is surprisingly flat and stroller-friendly; the hills start when you head toward Coit Tower or Nob Hill. The Powell-Mason and California Street cable cars both run through, at nine dollars a ride, and regular buses cost normal Muni fare, which is free for riders eighteen and under. Driving means a garage; Portsmouth Square Garage is the reliable one. Restrooms are at Portsmouth Square and Washington Square, not in the alleys, so plan around the parks.
