Coit Tower

Attractions · North Beach · 1 Telegraph Hill Blvd

San Francisco skyline and Bay Bridge at night

Climb the Filbert or Greenwich steps (or ride the 39 Coit bus) to this Art Deco landmark. 1930s murals line the ground floor, and the elevator leads to 360-degree bay views.

Local Legend: Coit Tower, the “Fire-Hose Nozzle”, Telegraph Hill

What is actually true: Rec and Park, which runs the tower, says plainly that it “was not designed to resemble a firehose nozzle”. The rest is true: Coit was an honorary member of Knickerbocker Engine Co. No. 5, and her bequest to beautify the city paid for both Coit Tower, completed in 1933 to a design by Arthur Brown Jr.’s firm, and the volunteer firefighters monument in Washington Square below. The murals inside were painted in 1934 by artists of the Public Works of Art Project.

Questions People Ask About Coit Tower

How much is the lift up Coit Tower?

For visitors from outside San Francisco: $11 an adult, $8 for a senior aged 62 or over, $8 for a youth aged 12 to 17, $3 for a child aged 5 to 11, and free for children 4 and under. San Francisco residents pay $8, $5, $5, $2 and free. Tickets are sold in the gift shop at the tower, up to an hour before closing.

Is Coit Tower free?

Getting to the tower and seeing the 1934 murals around its base costs nothing. Only the elevator to the observation deck at the top is ticketed. A docent-led tour of the murals is $10 a person, or $5 for the second floor only, for groups of four to six.

What time does Coit Tower close?

6 pm from April to October and 5 pm from November to March; it opens at 10 am all year. Tickets stop being sold one hour before closing, so arrive before 5 pm in summer and before 4 pm in winter if you want to go up. It is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Should we drive to Coit Tower with children?

The park says parking at the tower is very limited and the line of cars waiting for the lot can be very long at peak times. Muni's 39 Coit bus comes up from Fisherman's Wharf. Walking up the Filbert Street stairs through the Grace Marchant Garden, or the Greenwich Street stairs, is the scenic way but it is a steep climb.
