How This Works

  1. Our closure tracker. Places we have confirmed closed, moved or renamed, each dated and sourced, and checked by address against the city’s business register. See the tracker.
  2. Our directory. Places we list, checked when we last updated them.
  3. The city business register (SF Treasurer, via DataSF), searched live. It records when a business registered at a location and, if it did, when that registration ended. An ended registration usually means the business closed or left that address. An active one does not prove a place is open today, and registers update weeks or months late.

For privacy we only show a business’s name, its neighborhood and its dates. Registrations filed under a person’s own name are left out, and we never show owners or street addresses. Your search is sent to our server and on to DataSF; we don’t store it.
