Alcatraz is one of the few San Francisco outings that kids tend to remember, and the National Park Service is clear that it is a fine place for them. The catch is the terrain, the food situation and the fall closure, so it helps to know those before you book.
Is Alcatraz Appropriate for Young Children?
The NPS Kids and Youth page says families often ask whether a former penitentiary is suitable for children, and its answer is a definite yes. The park says children often find other things interesting too: the ferry ride across the bay, the birds and flowers that live on the island, the views of the city and the bridges, and the steep hill itself.
How Hard Is the Walk on the Island?
Harder than most city outings if you are pushing a stroller. The NPS says the route from the Pier 33 dock up to the Cell House is about a quarter mile and climbs 130 feet, which it compares to a 13-story building spread over that distance. Most roads and paths on the island have extreme slopes. The route from the Cell House down to the Recreation Yard has about 45 steps, and the uphill route to the Barracks from the dock is very steep.
Visitors with mobility needs can use the accessible tram, called S.E.A.T., which runs from the dock to the Cell House. The NPS describes it as transport for visitors with mobility impairments, so ask staff on arrival whether it fits your family before you plan around it. The Cell House has an elevator to its second story.
What Should Kids and Grown-Ups Bring?
Comfortable walking shoes with grip-type soles, and a light jacket or sweater even when the day starts warm, because the NPS says the weather can change quickly. Wear rain gear in the wet winter months. The NPS advises against sandals, leather soles, high heels and open-toe shoes. The island has no food for sale apart from dry snacks and candy at the bookstore, so eat before you board and pack snacks for the day.
What Is There for Kids to Do?
Everyone is welcome to become a Junior Ranger, and the NPS says certain days offer Junior Ranger programs led by park staff. Ranger programs change with the season and staffing, so check the park’s schedule for the day you go. Outside the programs, the ferry ride, the wildlife and the bay views are the parts the NPS says children enjoy most.
Is Alcatraz Open This Fall?
Not for a few weeks. The NPS says the island will close from 26 October to 18 November 2026 for dock repairs, and the ferry company’s site says it is temporarily closing beginning 26 October. If your trip falls in that window, plan for a different day, and check the dates again before you buy tickets.
How Do You Buy Tickets?
All access to the island is through Alcatraz City Cruises, the ferry company the NPS contracts with. As of October 2026 its ticket page lists the Alcatraz Day Tour from $47.95 with fees and taxes included, and it refunds cancellations made at least 72 hours before departure. Prices and closure dates change, so confirm both on the ticket page before you go.
Want the History?
Alcatraz was a lighthouse, a fort, an Army prison and a federal penitentiary before it was a park. The dates are in our history of Alcatraz, with the legend of cell 14D.
