San Francisco skyline and Bay Bridge at night

San Francisco might be the best date-night city in America. It has candlelit dining rooms, bridges that light up after dark, cliffside sunsets and cocktail lounges with history in the walls. Whether it’s a first date, an anniversary, or a rare night out with a babysitter booked, here’s where to go, what it costs, and how to plan it.

Book ahead: the most romantic tables in town (Foreign Cinema’s courtyard, a window at Waterbar) are gone weeks in advance on weekends. A Tuesday or Wednesday date is easier to book and often more relaxed.

Romantic dinners

Foreign Cinema · Mission

You eat in a courtyard strung with lights while a classic film plays silently on the wall. A seafood tower and a bottle of bubbly set the tone for a long, unhurried evening.

2534 Mission St · $$$ · Films start at dusk; ask for the courtyard. Reservations open 60 days out. · Website

The Progress · Fillmore

Plants, pale wood and teal tile make this room warm rather than stuffy. It comes from the team behind State Bird Provisions, and the dishes are built for sharing across the table.

1525 Fillmore St · $$$$ · Nightly 5:30–10pm · Save it for an anniversary-level splurge. · Website

Cotogna · Jackson Square

A rustic Italian room with dim lighting, a wood-fired hearth and handmade pastas. The giant egg-yolk raviolo is the dish you split and talk about later.

490 Pacific Ave · $$$ · Closed Sundays; parklet tables come with blankets on chilly nights. · Website

Nopa · NoPa

Ask a local where they fell for San Francisco and many will name this high-ceilinged, buzzing dining room. The wood-fired California cooking is reliably excellent, and the room is lively enough to keep conversation easy.

560 Divisadero St · $$–$$$ · Open until 11pm Fri–Sat, handy after a show. · Website

Trestle · Jackson Square

A small, wood-lined room serving a weekly-changing prix fixe that is one of the best values downtown. It feels special without the special-occasion bill.

531 Jackson St · $$ (prix fixe about $52/person) · Bix is steps away for a nightcap. · Website

Dinner with a view

Waterbar · Embarcadero

Floor-to-ceiling windows face the Bay Bridge as its lights come on. Seafood towers and a deep wine list make it easy to linger.

399 The Embarcadero · $$$$ · Book around sunset and ask for a window or patio table. Happy hour at the bar daily 2:30–5pm. · Website

Greens · Fort Mason

A converted warehouse with big windows on the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands. The vegetarian cooking is creative enough that nobody misses meat.

Fort Mason Center, Building A · $$$ · Dinner Tue–Sun · Website

Empress by Boon · Chinatown

A polished Cantonese dining room high above Chinatown with views of Coit Tower and the skyline, led by a Michelin-starred chef.

838 Grant Ave · $$$$ (prix fixe about $118/person) · Business casual; ask for a window seat. · Website

Scoma’s · Fisherman’s Wharf

A 60-year-old seafood house on a working pier, with fishing boats tied up outside. Cioppino and old-school service make it the Wharf spot locals still recommend.

1965 Al Scoma Way (Pier 47) · $$$ · Early evening gives the best light on the water. · Website

Beach Chalet · Ocean Beach

The upstairs dining room looks straight out over the Pacific, so sunset is the main event. Downstairs, don’t miss the 1930s WPA murals.

1000 Great Highway · $$ · Weekday happy hour 4–6pm · Website
