What to Expect at Fisherman’s Wharf: Hours, Sea Lions, Getting There

What to expect at Fisherman's Wharf: hours, PIER 39 sea lions, F-line and cable car routes, parking and the gaps we could not confirm.

Fisherman’s Wharf is a stretch of waterfront, not one place. The district runs from Ghirardelli Square on Beach Street to PIER 39 on The Embarcadero, and its landmark sign sits at Jefferson and Taylor streets. The waterfront is open all hours; shops and attractions keep their own.

There is no BART stop. Most visitors arrive by F-line streetcar, cable car or car.

Read on 3 November 2026: the Fisherman’s Wharf Community Benefit District, PIER 39, SFMTA and the City of San Francisco. The district is a nonprofit of Wharf business and property owners, so treat its numbers as its own claims.

Alcatraz closure: the National Park Service closed Alcatraz Island to visitors from October 26 to November 18, 2026 for dock repairs (read October 28, 2026; see our Alcatraz visit guide). This note hides itself after November 18.

What The Wharf Is, and Where

The district says the Wharf spans Ghirardelli Square on Beach Street to PIER 39, and covers the piers from PIER 39 through Pier 45 plus Hyde Street Pier. Its GPS address for the sign area is 2820 Taylor St. The district describes the area as an old fishing neighborhood that began with Italian immigrant fishermen in the mid-1800s and says active fishing boats and seafood markets are still part of it.

The Sea Lions

California sea lions began hauling out on PIER 39’s K-Dock after the Loma Prieta earthquake in October 1989. PIER 39 says numbers rise and fall with the seasons, food supply and migration, and that the count hit a record of more than 2,100 in May and June of 2024. It also says they may bite if provoked, so keep your distance. PIER 39 runs a live sea lion webcam if you want to check before you go.

Getting There

  • F Market & Wharves. SFMTA runs the historic streetcar from the Castro up Market Street and along The Embarcadero, ending at Jones and Beach streets. It runs 7 a.m. to midnight daily. SFMTA notes some stops between Van Ness and 1st Street are not wheelchair accessible. From BART’s Embarcadero station, the district says to catch it in front of the Ferry Building.
  • Cable cars. Powell-Hyde ends at Hyde and Beach streets near Aquatic Park, and runs 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. The district says Powell-Mason ends at Taylor and Bay streets, in the middle of the Wharf. SFMTA requires you to prepay at Powell and Market, Bay and Taylor, and Hyde and Beach from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. A single ride is $9 with no transfers. See the Muni One-Pager.
  • Buses. PIER 39 lists the 8-Bayshore, 30-Stockton, 39-Coit and 49-Van Ness/Mission, and notes the 47-Van Ness as temporarily suspended.
  • Ferry. The Golden Gate Ferry lands at the Ferry Building, where you pick up the F-line, per the district.
  • Taxi and rideshare. PIER 39 has a passenger loading zone at its entrance.

Parking at The Wharf

  • PIER 39 Garage. Across from the entrance plaza, open 24 hours, 6 ft 8 in clearance. PIER 39 lists a $40 per day rate Monday to Thursday for cars entering after 3 p.m. and leaving before 10 a.m., and one hour of validated parking with a meal at participating full-service restaurants. It says rates can change and weekday rates do not apply on holidays.
  • Hyde and Beach. The district names a Fisherman’s Wharf Parking Garage there, and other lots around the neighborhood.
  • Meters. SFMTA lists Fisherman’s Wharf among the areas where meters run on Sunday. Read our parking page first.
  • Valuables. The district’s own FAQ says do not leave valuables in the car.

Crowds and Staying Safe

The district’s FAQ says the Wharf draws over 12 million visitors a year. That is the district’s own claim and we have not confirmed it. Its safety advice is the ordinary kind: keep belongings close in crowds, avoid leaving valuables in the car, stick to well-lit, busy areas at night. What to Do Next

What We Could Not Confirm

  • Parking garage prices beyond the PIER 39 deals above. PIER 39’s rate table did not come through as text.
  • The 12 million visitors a year figure. It is the district’s claim.
  • How far apart the piers are on foot. We read no walking times.
  • Whether sea lions are on K-Dock today. Check the PIER 39 webcam.
  • The Powell-Mason end stop, which comes from the district’s page. We read SFMTA’s Powell-Hyde page, not Powell-Mason.
  • The district’s FAQ and site carry sponsor panels. We do not take or repeat sponsor claims.
