San Francisco’s New Year’s Eve fireworks are a free, city-sponsored midnight show over the Bay on the Embarcadero, south of the Ferry Building. The 2026 show has not been announced yet. This page holds everything that was confirmed for last year’s show (31 December 2025), clearly labelled as last year’s, and we check the official pages every week and will replace it with the 2026 details the day they appear.
2026 Status: Not yet Announced
Downtown SF’s event page for the show still reads “Past Event” and lists only the Wednesday, 31 December 2025 show. SFMTA publishes its New Year’s Eve Muni plan in the last days of December, so the 2026 transit details are not out either. Until then, treat everything below as how it worked last year, not as a promise for 2026. Last checked on 20 October 2026.

Where to Watch
- South of the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero is the spot both Downtown SF and SFMTA point to. Funcheap’s guide to the show adds that the fireworks typically launch from barges about 1,000 feet out in the bay near Pier 14 and that standing right in front of the Ferry Building is a poor view, because the building blocks it and it is the most crowded spot. Funcheap: NYE fireworks in San Francisco
- Music: Funcheap says the show is synchronized to music played through speakers along the promenade from Pier 14 toward the Bay Bridge, with no radio simulcast and no live entertainment. This was last year’s setup; we will confirm it for 2026.
- Quieter views: Funcheap lists Telegraph Hill (the ends of Alta Street and Calhoun Terrace, both residential, so keep quiet and take your trash), the Marin Headlands and the East Bay hills. It notes that the city discourages going to Treasure Island for the show because traffic and parking can be restricted.
- From a window: BARTable noted that last year the Clift Royal Sonesta hotel’s party showed a live screening of the fireworks; hotel parties are ticketed adult events, not family plans.
Getting There and Getting Home
Muni: for New Year’s Eve 2025, SFMTA ran free service on every Muni route from 8pm on 31 December until 5am on 1 January, the 26th year in a row, with the Metro fare gates open and no need to tap Clipper or activate a MuniMobile ticket. It added extra Muni Metro shuttle trains from 8pm to 2am (S shuttles between West Portal and 4th & King, and between Chinatown and 3rd & Mariposa) and extra buses from 10pm to 2am on the 5 Fulton, 7 Haight/Noriega, 14 Mission, 22 Fillmore, 24 Divisadero, 25 Treasure Island, 38 Geary, 90 Owl, 91 Owl, L Owl, N Owl and M (westbound only). SFMTA also warned drivers to expect delays near the Embarcadero from about 11pm to 1am. SFMTA press release
BART: BART ran extended late-night service on New Year’s Eve with normal fares, and BARTable pointed fans to Embarcadero Station, about 0.3 miles from the waterfront viewing area. BART holiday schedule · BARTable
Driving is the hard way: the area around the Embarcadero slows from about 11pm and garages near the Ferry Building fill. Our Muni, BART and cable cars with kids guide covers fares and the Muni and BART basics. The station neighborhoods are Financial District and South Beach.
With Kids
A midnight show on a cold waterfront is a long night for young children. These are our practical suggestions, not organizer rules:
- Dress in layers with hats and gloves; the Embarcadero is exposed to the bay wind. Bring ear protection for small children, because the barges are close.
- Pick a meeting spot before you go, as the SF Department of Emergency Management advises, in case your group is separated in the crowd.
- Decide your route home before midnight: with free Muni last year, trains and buses filled within minutes of the finale. Leaving a few minutes early, or waiting 30 to 45 minutes, can be easier with a child in tow.
- An earlier option: last year Thrive City at Chase Center held a “Winter Wonderland Kwanzaa & Noon Year’s Eve” with a countdown at noon, per BARTable. We have not seen a 2026 version yet.
Safety and Alerts
The SF Department of Emergency Management has asked people to text NYESF to 888-777 for New Year’s Eve emergency alerts (see sfdem.org/NYESF). It also reminds people that all fireworks, including “Safe and Sane” ones, are dangerous and illegal in San Francisco, so watch the public show instead. Alcohol is part of many New Year’s Eve parties in the city; this fireworks show itself is free and open to all ages, and drinking in the crowd is something to plan around with kids, not something we recommend.

Are there fireworks in San Francisco on New Year's Eve 2026?
The 2026 show has not been announced yet. The city has hosted a free midnight fireworks show on the Embarcadero south of the Ferry Building in recent years, and this page will be updated with the 2026 details when they are published. 31 December 2026 is a Thursday.
What time are the San Francisco New Year's Eve fireworks?
Last year's show (31 December 2025) was at midnight and lasted about 15 minutes, per SFMTA. The 2026 time has not been announced.
Where is the best place to watch the SF New Year's Eve fireworks?
For the 2025 show, SFMTA pointed to the Embarcadero south of the Ferry Building near Pier 14, and Downtown SF listed the Embarcadero from Mission to Folsom, with a tip to arrive by 11:30pm. The 2026 location has not been announced.
Are the San Francisco New Year's Eve fireworks free?
Yes, last year's show was a free, city-sponsored public event. Tickets are only needed for private parties and ticketed concerts.
Is Muni free on New Year's Eve in San Francisco?
For New Year's Eve 2025, SFMTA ran free Muni service on all routes from 8pm on 31 December to 5am on 1 January, with extra Metro shuttle trains until 2am and extra buses from 10pm to 2am. The 2026 plan has not been published; SFMTA usually releases it in the last days of December.
Is it a good idea to take young kids to the SF New Year's Eve fireworks?
It is a long, cold night: the show is at midnight, the crowd was put at around 200,000 last year, and getting home is slow. Layers, ear protection, a meeting spot and a plan for the trip home help; an earlier family countdown such as last year's Noon Year's Eve at Thrive City is an easier alternative if it returns.
