Halloween in San Francisco 2026, by the Numbers: Trick-or-Treat Street Closures and Family Events

30 San Francisco blocks have a city permit to close for trick-or-treating on Halloween night 2026. Counts by neighborhood from SFMTA permits, plus the family Halloween events we have checked.

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, and in San Francisco much of it happens on streets that neighbors close themselves. Every one of those closures needs an SFMTA permit, so the permit data is the most reliable count of where the city will be trick-or-treating. This page counts them by neighborhood, adds the family Halloween events we have checked, and is re-run every Monday until Halloween.

We count these blocks; we do not list them. Residential closures point to people’s homes, so this page and its CSV show neighborhood totals only. For the famous trick-or-treat streets, see our Halloween with kids guide, and check the SFMTA’s trick-or-treat page closer to Halloween.

The Rest of the Fall Calendar

Between 1 October and 2 November our events calendar has 99 events, 76 of them family-friendly and 59 of those listed as free (a few with an RSVP, a residency condition or a ferry ticket). These are events we have picked and checked, not every event in the city, so read them as a guide to what is worth doing rather than a census.

How We Built This

Sources

  • Temporary Street Closures (DataSF 8×25-yybr), from the SFMTA, updated daily. It holds only permitted closures.
  • Analysis Neighborhoods (DataSF j2bu-swwd), for neighborhood boundaries.
  • The Project SF events calendar (also published as events.json), for the family events, each checked against its organizer’s page.

Method

  1. We keep permits of type “Special Event” whose closure covers and group their street segments by permit case, so each closure counts once.
  2. We keep residential closures only: trick-or-treat streets, Halloween block parties and neighborhood parties, using the same rules as our street fair calendar. Public events such as night markets, farmers’ markets and races are left out of the count.
  3. Each closure is placed in a neighborhood by the midpoint of its first closed street segment.
  4. We re-pull the permits every Monday until Halloween and update the numbers and the log below.

What This Data Cannot Tell You

  • This counts permits, not parties. A permit is what makes a closure official, but it does not say how busy the block will be or how many houses will hand out candy.
  • The count is a snapshot: permits keep arriving through October, so early counts are low. We do not have a comparable count for past years yet; the SFMTA data only holds current and upcoming closures.
  • Family events are the ones on our calendar, not every event in the city.
