What to Bring

  • A compact umbrella in your bag. Rain isn’t in the forecast, but fog can leave things damp, and a small umbrella weighs nothing. A hooded jacket does double duty against wind.
  • Layers. The forecast runs from 57° to 66° across the city this weekend. Layers: a sweater and a jacket.
  • Shoes with grip. Steep sidewalks and cable car tracks get slick when they’re wet.

Weather Tips by Part of Town

West Side

The Sunset, the Richmond, Golden Gate Park and Ocean Beach are usually the coolest, foggiest and windiest part of the city. Fog can leave everything damp even when it isn’t raining.

The Waterfront

The Embarcadero, Fisherman’s Wharf and the piers catch the wind off the bay. Rain feels colder there, so this is where the hood matters most.

The Mission Side

The Mission, Potrero Hill and Noe Valley are often warmer and sunnier, because the hills around them block much of the fog. Rain is a different story: storms reach everywhere.

The Hills

Twin Peaks, Nob Hill and Russian Hill are windier at the top, and steep wet sidewalks are slippery. Take the bus or cable car up instead of walking.

Most go ahead in light rain; heavy rain can cancel them. The organizer’s page will say.
